Did God Really Make Everything? Part 3; Theology of the Synoptics, Part 3 (The Study of God #36)

Today’s passage of Scripture is John 4:24 which reads: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Today’s words from a theologian are from Origen. He said: “For whatever be the knowledge which we are able to obtain of God, either by perception or reflection, we must of necessity believe that He is by many degrees far better than what we perceive Him to be.”

Our first topic for today is titled “Did God Really Make Everything? (Part 3)” from the book, “Understanding Theology in 15 Minutes a Day” by Dr. Daryl Aaron.

— The Purpose of God in Creation

God’s purpose in creation is also clear. He made everything for his glory, and in this sense all creation is first and foremost theocentric—about God. But it is likewise proper to say he made everything for humans, for us to live and thrive. Our environment provides air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat; planet earth is precisely the right distance from the sun for a life-conducive temperature range (though we in Minnesota sometimes wonder about this in the winter).

Our second topic for today is titled “Theology of the Synoptics (Part 3)” from “The Moody Handbook of Theology” by Dr. Paul Enns.

— Modern Developments

Modern critical theories have arisen in which attempt is made to explain the human origin and production of the gospel writings. While this methodology can have some validity and some conservative scholars employ these critical studies to understand the biblical records, there are inherent dangers. The explanations given here are a general explanation; they can be given a more liberal or a more conservative slant, depending on the writer.

Historical criticism. When the text is obscure, scholars attempt to discover “what actually happened” to help clarify the narrative. This is done by noting discrepancies in parallel accounts, examining secular history material, noting whether some events actually happened, recognizing supernatural occurrences (attempt is made to find a natural explanation), “invented” stories by the church, and other methods. A basic problem in historical criticism is that it approaches the Bible like any other book and acknowledges the possibility of error; in this sense it is incompatible with the doctrine of biblical inspiration.

Did God Really Make Everything? Part 2; Theology of the Synoptics, Part 2 (The Study of God #35)

Today’s passage of Scripture is Luke 17:20-21 which reads: “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

Today’s words from a theologian are from Norman Geisler. He said: “All views can’t be true because all views are opposite; this is the logical aspect. For example, Islam says we are good in nature; Christianity says we are born in sin. Islam says God is a man; Christianity says He is more than a man, He is God. All truths can’t be the same.”

One implication of note is that God is ultimate reality. That fact rules out a worldview or philosophy known as dualism, which asserts that there are two ultimate realities — for example, spirit and matter. There is nothing higher or of greater value than God, and there is nothing or no one equal to God. He and he alone is worthy of worship.

Further, reflecting his matchless wisdom, God created in the very best way he could have created. Thus Genesis 1 states over and over, “God saw that it was good” and finally, “it was very good.” Out of the nearly infinite number of different possibilities, he chose the one very best way to create; he could not have improved on what he did in any way.

What is the relationship of the three gospels to one another? Several theories have been suggested.

Oral Tradition Theory: It was believed that the preaching of the early church provided fixed forms to the life and ministry of Jesus, but there were no written forms behind the Synoptic Gospels.

Interdependence Theory: In 1789, Gries-bach taught that the first writer drew upon oral tradition, the second writer used the material from the first writer, while the third writer drew upon the other two.

Primitive Gospel Theory: In 1778, Lessing taught that the gospel writers borrowed from a primitive source called Ur-evangelium, which no longer exists.

Today’s passage of Scripture is Luke 16:16 which reads: “The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

Today’s words from a theologian are from Michael Horton. He said: “Once we truly grasp the message of the ‘New Testament’, it is impossible to read the ‘Old Testament’ again without seeing Christ on every page, in every story, foreshadowed or anticipated in every event and narrative.”

God created everything — this fact utterly permeates Scripture! That the biblical writers brought it up over and over again establishes its importance. And the implications for one’s worldview are enormous, as we will see.

What does the Bible teach about God’s work of creation? The main account is in Genesis 1 and 2, and though opinions differ regarding proper interpretation of some details — it is not an easy text to understand in detail — some aspects are crystal clear.

Our second topic for today is titled “Theology of the Synoptics (Part 1)” from “The Moody Handbook of Theology” by Dr. Paul Enns.

In developing the theology of the Synoptic Gospels, it is important to understand the viewpoint of the writer. To whom did Matthew, Mark, and Luke write? Why did they write? What is the particular emphasis of each writer? What themes do they stress? These are important questions in biblical theology that determine what theological emphases and concerns were developed by the individual writers. The nature of biblical theology rests particularly with the concerns of the human writer (without neglecting or ignoring the fact of divine inspiration).
